Thick as a brick

A new musical which, following a sell out run at Spring Street Theatre Hull in April and May 1999 finished a nationwide tour at the Greenwich Theatre in Spring 2001.

This musical is set in Common Road High, a problem school: bottom of the league tables and low on morale. When Mary Clifford goes back to teaching drama after a fifteen-year break, the school is nothing like the romantic notion she remembers of high school education. Science is being favoured over the arts and she sets out to redress the balance by highlighting the adverse effects of marginalising the arts. This is a hilarious show dealing with a very serious subject.

As Godber says "If we in theatre don't stand up and say the arts are worth fighting for, then where a theatre once stood there'll be a carpet warehouse."

"an all singing, all dancing extravaganza of a show, probably unlike anything you have ever seen before!" (Hull Daily Mail)

"... fresh as a clean page in an exercise book. The original music is a major innovation .... a variety of modern styles from street rap to sentimental ballad."(Yorkshire Post).

"John Pattison's music brings a fifth gear to Godber's work complementing lyrics of wit and pathos" (Yorkshire Evening Press).
